i definitely agree that businesses fail because of systems and not because of people. A few things i'd like to add - people are an integral part as well and just as you say that one needs to make a commitment to the business, one needs to make a commitment to the people of the business as well - so the staff needs to be in the loop not only during brainstorming but when all policies, meeting etc. that will affect culture etc are being drafted.

With respect to setting systems in place i think smart business owners should go about using tools that enable systems to be in place. I work in the content business and and i have various projects (content divisions) that my team works on -- for such a job, Project Management Tools work great. Ive tried many and the one i currently use is called Deskaway . It helps me systemise my processes in such a way that i can assign tasks, set milestones, share key information & contacts etc, track things from a birds eye view etc. So essentially i feel like i have a lot of control. That i think is essential - an overall view and control. I guess the tool you use depends on the business - some may need CRM tools, some may need invoicing tools, some may need tools related to high end DBMS. There's a lot of options in the market. I'd recommend web based tools.

In my opinion, tools to systemize processes is a must. Having said that - tools are not the only thing. Sharp acumen has to be applied.
